Sedation Dentistry
What Is Conscious Sedation?
Conscious sedation is a technique used in dentistry and medical procedures to help patients relax while remaining awake and responsive. It involves administering sedative medications that reduce anxiety, discomfort, and pain while allowing the patient to stay conscious and able to follow instructions.
How Does It Work?
- Oral Sedation – A prescribed pill taken before the procedure to induce relaxation.
- Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas) – A gas inhaled through a mask to provide a calming effect.
What to Expect During and After
Patients under conscious sedation typically feel drowsy and relaxed but can still respond to verbal cues. They may not remember much of the procedure, which is beneficial for those with dental anxiety. Afterward, effects like grogginess may linger for a few hours, so a companion is usually required to assist with transportation home if stronger sedation methods are used.
Conscious sedation makes dental procedures, including extractions and implants, more comfortable and stress-free. If you have concerns about pain or anxiety during treatment, talk to your dentist about whether conscious sedation is right for you.
